KS2 - Celebration Assembly

We had a very busy celebration assembly this week with a huge amount certificates being handed out. This is visible by the number children in the photo! Well done to all of you. Congratulations go to 5G for winning the attendance cup with 99.3% and to Stirling for wining the House Cup. They are currently winning at the half way point of the term. There was also a big round of applause for the Friars staff bowling team! Last week they took on teachers from other Southend schools and emerged victorious. Great work!

Rounders tournament

During the morning Year 5 took part in their tournament and after going through some difficult rules they struggled in the first game against Heycroft. Unfortunately Heycroft were very good in the field and although their tactics could have been seen as boring, they were very effective. This meant we lost our first game and needed to beat West Leigh in the final game. The team didn’t start well in the field and gave away a couple of rounders and unfortunately did not recover from this and lost 7-2. A big learning experience for the Year 5 children who will work harder next year and hopefully this will improve the performance. In the afternoon, in the glorious sunshine, it was the Year 6 comp

Year one visit East Beach

Year 1 have had a fun afternoon on Tuesday visiting East Beach as part of their topic work for Geography ‘The local areas’. The children walked both there and back very well as they talked about all the road signs and buildings they could see. Once on the beach they had fun collecting a range of shells, stones and pebbles which they carried back to class to continue their learning – talking about what they had collected, making pictures with them and reading about these in non-fiction texts. The children had a wonderful time and we are very proud of their behaviour throughout the afternoon.

KS2 Celebration Assembly

Well done to this week's certificate winners. There were a large number received, particularly in Year 6, and it was great to hear about the variety of reasons for them. There is clearly no let-up in the work load in Year 6 post SATs as we heard about all the writing they have been doing. We saw some fantastic work which Gabrielle in Year 4 completed at home with her dad on the topic of World War 2 and heard how Daisy voluntarily contributed her copper coin collection to help to pay for the school guinea pigs. As a result, one of the new guinea pigs will be named Daisy. Well done 4O for winning the Attendance Cup and Caernarfon for winning the House Cup.

The year 2 children have shown real perseverance and determination during their tests this week. Year 1 were praised for super performances in their assembly to parents – which was enjoyed by all! Attendance Cup The Attendance Cup was awarded to 2R again! They achieved 98.6% this week. Well done! Team Cup The Team Cup was awarded to Caernarfon (yellow team) Well done –keep up your hard work!

Archery

Last Friday four Year 5 and 6 children took part in an Archery tournament at Alleyn Court. They had been to Belchamps for some practice sessions along with Greenways and had really enjoyed trying something new. The tournament itself was difficult, with many competitors owning their own equipment, as some schools had run morning clubs. The children did perform well with a couple scoring ten points by hitting the bullseye and were a creditable 4th in the standings. The children all enjoyed the experience and loved trying something a bit different that not everyone at Friars gets to do.

KS1 Tag Rugby

Last Wednesday saw us take part in the KS1 Tag Rugby tournament at Southend Rugby Club. The weather was beautiful and after a few training sessions and a practice match with Hamstel Infants under our belts the team were ready. The goals for the tournament were simple Try your best Listen to advice and instruction Have Fun. The first game was against Greenways and after a low scoring first half the match finished 3-2 to Friars. The second match paired us with West Leigh, who had won their first match 7-1, and a poor first half saw Friars 4-0 down. After a few words from Mr Telling the second half was much better and although losing 7-3 overall, the second half was a draw. The final two matche

KS1 Celebration Assembly

This has been a great week for Keystage 1. We started with a record number of 51 key word certificates being given out which included 5 penguin certificates for those children who now know all of their key words. We then celebrated our tag rugby team's achievement in winning a bronze medal at the inter school tournament this week before finally awarding leaves for a variety of great reasons such as having a super work attitude, improving their writing or making a great start in their new school. Well done to Class 2R for winning the attendance cup and to Stirling and Stormont for drawing to win the team points.

KS2 Celebration assembly

Well done to everybody for another great week at Friars. It has not been easy as there have been SATs tests for Year 6 and year groups have had to do without their LSA for certain periods whilst the tests took place. It is fantastic to hear how well everyone has coped and about the hard work which has taken place. We were also able to hand out snack bar vouchers to Louise, Elizabete and Shane for making healthy choices for their lunches. Finally, well done to our collection of medal winners who brought their medals in to show. We had Maggie and Kyla completing Walk for life, Evie receiving a diving medal, Christian showing his football medal and a martial arts gold for Tristan! Great work.

KS2 Celebration Assembly

Well done to this week's certificate winners. It is always great to hear how hard you have been working from your teachers. Congratulations to Windsor for winning the House Cup this week and to both 3W and 5G for winning the Attendance Cup.

Cheerleading Competition

Congratulations to Eliza, Phoebe, Katerina and Grace in Year 3 who took part in a cheer leading competition over the Easter holidays with their club. They performed superbly and their efforts were rewarded when they won gold! They brought their medals into school and received a rapturous round of applause in assembly last week. Great work girls!

Hi5 Netball tournament

On Wednesday the Y5/6 mixed Hi-5 Netball team went to Garons to compete in the Southend Schools tournament. The first game against Our Lady of Lourdes saw Friars completely dominate and win 5-0. The next games saw a defeat against West Leigh and a very competitive 3-3 draw against Bournes Green, left Friars in a good position before their last match. At this time the heavens opened and hailstones the size of golf balls started to fall so it was decided to continue the competition indoors. The last game was against Earls Hall and only a win would be good enough to make the semi-finals. In the end the match was drawn 2-2, which meant a 3rd place finish in the group. It was a great performance
