Welcome to our Reception Page

Welcome to our Reception class page. We are a large open plan unit, where two classes share a wonderful space including our lovely outdoor area. Your journey with Friars starts with stay and play sessions and then a home visit in September from your child’s new teacher. At the home visit we will share what the school day looks like with your child and find out about some of their interests in order to make starting school a happy experience for both you and your child. During the first half term in Reception, we concentrate on settling the children in, helping them to make new friends and learn the rules and routines of school.  We provide an environment which allows the children to play and explore following their own interests and the staff support the children in accessing all the different areas in the classroom and outdoor spaces.  These areas include creative, small world, physical, construction, writing, maths and role play.

Shortly after the children are settled into school routines, we begin to introduce reading books and words through our phonics scheme Little Wandle. Your child will bring home a reading book to accompany their school learning, which we ask you to read with them several times in that week to build fluency. Maths takes place in two sessions. Just after the morning register, we count how many children are in school, learn our days of the week and complete our daily calendar. Just before lunch, we support the children’s mathematical development further with focused teaching through the BBC Numberblocks to ensure all children have a secure sense of number when they leave our EYFS.

The Power of Reading and Poetry Basket sessions take place in the afternoons where a carefully chosen story or poem is shared with the class to enable cross curricular learning opportunities and widen the children’s experiences, communication and language skills. The children may choose to explore this further in provision with adult support to enhance their understanding.

In continuous provision, the children are able to learn skills and embed class carpet time learning through their play. Here the staff teach, play and observe as your children build, paint, draw, climb, dig, make, make stories or create throughout their continuous play. Our experienced staff ensure that every play opportunity has high value in their learning and these experiences are shared with you through our sharing platforms.

In EYFS we provide a broad and balanced curriculum that ensures the children have both the support and determination to become lifelong learners.
