Year 6 is a challenging year for the children in many ways. Expectations are higher than ever before due to the Standard Assessments Tests in May and children are preparing to leave and move on to secondary school.

During the year, the children have the opportunity to learn about the Elizabethan, Victorian and Mayan eras. Linked to these areas of study, they are given the chance to use their creativity through drama, art and technology.

Throughout the year, the children are given opportunities to show their commitment to the school by representing Friars through sport, music, and children’s individual abilities are recognised through earning the chance to hold a position of trust within the school, for example, being a librarian or a playground helper.

Towards the end of the year, the children are able to participate in our residential trip to the Isle of Wight or, if they prefer, they can take part in the local activity week. They enable the children to take part in activities which are not normally accessible during the school day and encourage team-work, co-operation and friendship. The children develop skills such as resilience, perseverance and self-confidence.

The year culminates with the annual leaver’s assembly in which all children are able to participate to celebrate their time at Friars and to look forward to moving on to their new schools.
